As first-time wagon masters, we were not sure quite what to expect during our first week with our amigos. Granted, we have driven and camped extensively all over Mexico in the last four years but never leading a group. What a joy to find that we are thoroughly enjoying this experience! The journey started out quite cold at Potrero Park with unusual wintery weather blowing in. This did not dimish the amigos’ excitement to get across the border and experience Baja.
After a simple border crossing Tecate we made our way through the beautiful Valle de Guadalupe wine country and were unsurprised to hear the group express interest in spending more time in this wonderful area at a later time. We’re sure they’ll greatly enjoy their wine tasting tour on the way back north.
Ensenada was busy with cruise ship passengers but we weren’t staying long as we headed to our beach camp at Villarino RV, the amigos’ first night in Mexico. Everyone enjoyed the public bus ride out to check out the La Bufadora blowhole and easily navigated the shopping gauntlet to get the actual site before heading back to camp for a lovely evening on the beach.
The next few days flew by with a trip further south to Pabellon for a hot dog roast and campfire, some fantastic sightseeing among the boulder fields of Catavina, and a challenging road to Guerrero Negro for two of the highlights of the trip; fish tacos from Tony’s Taco Stand and whale watching!!!
The pace slowed as we headed to the date palm oasis and mission of San Ignacio and the calming beaches of Santispac on the Bahia de la Concepcion with much relaxation and beach time had by all.
Yesterday we packed up once again for the short and scenic drive to the Pueblo Magico city of Loreto where we enjoyed more fish tacos at El Rey del Taco, an art fair in the square, and a festive group dinner at Orlando’s.
Tomorrow we head off once again for the bustling town of La Paz with more updates to come.
