It’s a nice short drive to Loreto, and it’s Sunday, so not much is open today. We’re going to Rivera del Mar RV Park, and Yolanda is there ready to greet us as ever. It’s a lovely little park, and we are quickly shoehorned into place ready to explore the town.
A quick drive around town, and then a walking tour of the sights. It’s suddenly much warmer, and the day burns into a lovely afternoon and evening.
Loreto isn’t that big, but it had greatness in the past, and seems primed to be enveloped by a new wave of popularity now. The first mission of the Jesuits is here still,in its stony splendour, and a fine museum tells the tale of those hardy few. Now the cruise ships come with some frequency, and deposit wealth unimagined by those first European explorers.
Sunday also finds the laundry angel taking a well deserved rest. Uvaldo at the Giggling Dolphin is also taking the day off, so we all enjoy a leisurely afternoon, and later Diane&I go just down the street for a burrito as our usual haunt, Meza Luna, is too busy on the patio and too hot inside to be comfortable.
Monday finds everyone once again piling into the van for the 45 minute drive up into the mountains and the Mission San Javier. It’s a nice day for the drive, and the scenery is spectacular as ever. On arriving, it’s pretty quiet at the village, and we all wander, taking pictures and revelling in the cooling breeze that is so often present up here in the mountains.
It’s soon time to descent and return to sealevel, and Loreto. Our favourite lunchtime spot, Del Borracho, is “SHUT, Mon Tue” as the sign attests, so back to town to Conchitas shop and most of the crew dissipate into the warm afternoon, to meet back at the RV Park later for happy hour.
Ubaldo and the girls make good fajitas, and the margaritas flow freely. Music is delivered passionately by our favourite duo, and it’s appreciated greatly by everyone.
Morning comes all too soon, and the trip to Cuidad Constitution goes without hitch. They’ve cleaned up the old palapa restaurant floor, and it proves to be a perfect spot for the happy hour. It’s 37c here today, pretty well wilting weather. Even Jeanette has to admit that it’s finally HOT!
Next day it’s to the beach again, and it’s Playa Tecolote, just around La Paz and there we are. Two of the nicest days we’ve ever had on this beach, and everyone is raring to…. sit and revel in it.
Overnight, the wind howls and buffets our little rig, and we imagine that this bodes badly for the next day. Fortunately as if on cue, the wind abruptly stops at 7am, and the kayaks are in demand.
Potluck is amazing, and we burn the last of our wood from Santa Rosalia before retiring for the evening.
One little wrinkle to the idyllic scene though: Mike gets stung by some unknown seabeast and requires the usual treatment. Hot HOT water, massage and benadryl. It’s not much fun for Mike, but another lesson for us all: those pesky critters just don’t like being trodden on…. shuffle, shuffle those feet. By morning Mike’s all better, and no worse for the wear: a lucky escape, with only a small injection site to show for his troubles.
Over all too soon, we pack up our happy gang and go back through La Paz on our way to brunch at El Triunfo, the once incredibly prosperous mining town that almost disappeared completely, but is now back on the tourist map, due in no small part to the efforts of Marcus the baker.
It’s a short drive to Rancho Verde and our home for the night. Pretty near hot today, but the night brings cool relief, and a quiet sleep. Except for the horses, and the rooster, and some other unknown animal noises. Probably not dangerous. Maybe.
Morning comes quickly, and we’re off to see the Tropic of Cancer. We got up early this morning in order to get to our destination, Villa Serena RV Park, early enough to get electricity for all our 9 rigs. This early rise didn’t help however: another caravan had arrived THE DAY BEFORE. Grrrrrr.
Anyway, we all have at least some power for our stay in Cabo San Lucas, so it works out just fine anyway.
The BIG EVENT for today is dinner at Peter and Joe’s restaurant, Vagabundos. Peter is a great host as ever, and the meals are very good as is usual. Much dancing and hooting to an Eagles concert was the main event. and some John Fogerty classics. Lots of pics taken, more dancing, much mirth later and it’s well past Baja Midnight. All aboard the bus and we’re pouring out our precious cargo onto the RV Park gravel. It’s goodnight from us, and it’s goodnight all. Great times!
And now here you all are, I think we’re having fun. At J&P’s restaurant at Vagabundos, in Cabo San Lucas, in case you forgot:
